Use of the nation's public transit systems continues to grow, with U.S. transit ridership in the first quarter of 1999 up 3.85% over the same period in 1998 and up 13.6% over the same period 3 years ago. For the first quarter of 1999, ridership on Canada's public transit systems rose nearly 3%. All modes of transit showed ridership increases, led by heavy rail.
