Abstract
This study focuses on the traffic characteristics of the urban transient population, which is of basic importance to urban comprehensive traffic planning, and the adaptability and feasibility of new passenger transit models. The paper first classifies the transient population (travel/business; labor; transfer) and discusses each. The trip characteristics of each are also considered. The traffic characteristics are divided into current situation; and middle- and long-term trips. General trip volume and trip intensity are discussed. The methods and techniques described in the paper were applied in the Comprehensive Traffic Developent Plan and the Feasibility Study for the Light Rail Transit System in Chengdu City, China.
