Abstract
An overview is provided of the advanced technology efforts under way at the two major transit properties in the New Jersey/New York City metropolitan region. Insight is provided into how they relate to current intelligent vehicle-highway systems strategies and future IVHS opportunities and challenges in the metropolitan area. The NJ Transit and the New York MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) have played major roles in the development and use of advanced technologies in customer interface, marketing, vehicle operations and communications, and HOV (high occupancy vehicle) operations. This article describes the regions served by the NJ Transit and MTA, and reviews the current applications of advanced technologies. Customer interface (pre-trip passenger information) is described, as well as in-terminal information systems, and in-vehicle informatin systems. Electronic ticketing and automated trip payment, and vehicle opearations and communications are covered, as well as automatic toll collection, dynamic scheduling, and transit operations software.
