Abstract
An effort is reported which identified how downtown transit transfer centers are located and utilized. It assessed the effectiveness of these facilities in meeting the objectives for which they were intended. An inventory was compiled of jurisdictions where transit transfer centers have been implemented in the past 10 years. Information was collected of their basic attributes, and size, for each facility. Additional data were collected for some facilities. The study results indicate that existing transit transfer facilites are generally rated satisfactory. However, half of the survey respondents reported that the facilities had no impact on transit ridership. Negative factors affecting ridership such as the use of centers by non-transit patrons, and land-use conflicts are also discussed.
