Abstract

The article presents rule-of-thumb guidelines that are useful for projecting ridership. The article also presents a comparison of the station spacing found among various systems. A study was made of U.S. and selected Canadian systems which gleaned and consolidated rail transit data form various publications. Car use, trip lengths, system employment levels, and fare data were examined. Ridership spacing findings are presented in this article. Both average and ranges of values of the experiences of currently operating rail transit systems were examined. The details of data sources, and the findings of the study are briefly discussed.
