Abstract
Skilled technicians collected the following information to determine movie theater trip generation by hours of the day and days of the week: (1) Ticket sales by hour of day and day of week; (2) vehicle occupancy; and (3) modal split. Movie theater attendance is a recreational activity that only a small percentage of patrons do alone. Thus vehicle occupancy is moderately high (2.4 per vehicle), except late in the evening when vehicle occupancy drops (to 2.1 per vehicle). Modal split for movie attendees (recreational trips) occurs differently from modal split for commuters. In an urban environment more attendees are willing to walk to the theater. A sizeable percentage will also use transit, if it is relatively convenient.
